Defining Your Goals As A Mom

Defining your goals as a mom is just as important as having goals. A goal without a plan is just a wish. Listed below are ten steps to defining your goals as a mom.

1. Know Where You Are

Keep track of everything you do for a week. It doesn’t matter how big or how small write it down. This exercise also helps when it comes to tracking your finances. It gives you a thirty-foot view on what and how you’re spending your time and money. The results will amaze you!

2. Perfect Life

Now it’s time to create a mental picture of your perfect life. There is a great saying, " If you don't know where you've going, how do you know when you've gotten there. Use your five senses and be descriptive as possible. What do you see, feel, hear, taste and smell? Embody this exercise and don’t rush through it. It will help you seek and define what you want out of life. It also lays the foundation for a Vision Board or Life Plan.

3. Set Goals

Setting goals gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation. Now by making your list and knowing what your perfect day looks like it’s time to pick out the golden nuggets. If your vision of a perfect life consists of having a clean house and putting your children to bed on time, then you can start there. Your goals may read like this: I Will Have the Children in Bed By 8:00 pm On School Nights or I Will Clean My House Every Night Before I Go to Sleep. **Be specific and detailed when writing your goals. **

4. Create A Goal Action List

My husband always says that education with no implementation is just entertainment. After establishing your goals brainstorm ideas on what action steps, you can take to achieving them. Make sure each goal has five or more action items. Commit to your action steps make sure they are realistic and don’t let your foot up off the pedal until you have completed them. Here’s an example of an action list:

The Lion and The Gazelle

I came across a video on Facebook yesterday of three women running a race. Two of them were neck and neck about to cross the finish line. They paused to reach for each other’s hand so that they could cross together. The third women took advantage of their hesitation and pushed pass to win the race. The two women stood there stunned in disbelief and visibly upset about their decision. The moment they had work hard for was gone because they let their foot up off the pedal. How fast are you running to achieve your goals?

The video made me reflect on my favorite African Proverb

“The Lion and The Gazelle”

"Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle: when the sun comes up, you’d better be running."

How Fast Are You Running?

How fast are you running to achieve your goals, dreams and ambitions. Have you let your foot up off the gas? Sometimes in life its OK to pause and reflect on your accomplishments. However, that time is usually retirement. If you’re still in the race don’t get complacent no matter what your trying to accomplish in life. You owe it to yourself and family to pursue your passions and live your best life. It’s time to renew your commitment to yourself. So, whether you’re a gazelle or lion it’s time to start running.
